It is with great sadness that we create this page to our dear friend and colleague Ian Collis who died suddenly on Wednesday 9th February.
Ian was a quiet and gentle man who was passionate about many things, not least the his family, the broadcasting industry and Southampton Football Club. He was a special friend and work colleague who enabled many great things to happen throughout his career in the broadcast manufacturing industry at Sony and latterly at Harris.
Ian will be returning to his beloved Cornwall in the South West of England as his final resting place.
The Celebration of Ian’s life has been set for Monday 21st February at 11am and the location will be at St Paul’s Church, Church Road, Charlestown, St Austell. PL25 3NS (in Cornwall) in the UK. The burial will be immediately afterwards and will be by invitation only for family and close friends.
Ian’s family would very much like as many of Ian’s friends and colleagues as possible to attend the service at St Paul’s and also to join a small celebration shortly after the burial at the Pier House Hotel in Charlestown (next to the harbour) for Cornish Pasties, Kelly's Ice Cream, Scones and Cornish Clotted Cream, some of Ian's favourites ..!
Flowers are to be from family only. For those who want to make a donation, the chosen charity is the Diabetes Association. Please click the below link to donate to Diabetes UK:

The friend we miss.
I had the privalege to work with Ian for the last year. It was clear that Ian's calm, collected manner was respected by colleagues and customers alike - around the world. Everyone was Ian's friend.
Far too young to leave this world. With so much talent; relationships built on year's of well earned trust; and unfinished work that Ian's passion would drive him to complete.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the man I admired and respected. Ian - we miss you now and will miss you until the time we are all reunited.
I only met you once Ian, that informous night when I attempted to become your p.a. But one meeting was all it took for me to see what a real Gentleman you were. Your memory will live on in your children and grandchildren. RIP Ian x

Knowing him personally as we did for many years, we are well aware of the difference he made in the lives of many people, both here in the company, and in his private life.

A Dear Friend
Ian was a dear friend and valued colleague who will be greatly missed.
I had the huge privilege to have known him since he joined Yama and I in the BVH Product Management Group at Sony Broadcast in 1982. Penny and I were lucky enough to have shared in his triumphs and disappointments both in his personal and business live for almost 29 years.
Ian was indeed a true gentleman and part of a rare breed – a commercial engineer. His passing will leave a huge hole in our lives and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family.
A great loss to the industry
I'd like to pay my respects to Ian who's passing as come as a complete shock.
I had the very great pleasure of being introduced to Ian while I was working at Samsung and to form a partnership that has extended into my latest role at Prysm.
I can't believe I saw him only last at ISE and we had discussed our future plans together, he'll be sorely missed by everybody that worked for him or with him.
My condolences to his family, friends and work colleagues during this difficult time.
Best Regards
Nick Shaw.

Abridged version of the Reading given at Ian’s Celebration of Life of 21st Feb 2011.
Ian was a dear friend and colleague to many people. Some like me were lucky enough to be both for over 30 years since we first met in the back row of a maths lecture at Portsmouth Poly on our double E Engineering course. We were 18.
Working together to establish the Portsmouth Poly TV club, the thrashings he gave me at squash and the drives we took together later in life for several years in a row from Las Vegas to San Francisco to see an old friend of Ian’s - and sitting on the Wharf there, eating Sea food Chowder are a small sample of the times I cherished together and will never forget.
From our days in Portsmouth there were countless student motoring stories - many demonstrating Ian’s mechanical skills were not as well honed as his electronics or maths skills - including the episode with the gear stick coming of in his hand at speed ! My favourite which still makes us laugh out loud was when we were walking back from the pub one night and arrived at our dingy digs to find a guy trying to hotwire Derek’s Cortina right outside the front door. As the individual attempted to escape, Ian sprung into action and started performing his kata in the middle of the road – the lighting quick karate moves Ian had learned in his 2nd Dan black belt qualification. The guy was so surprised he surrendered immediately and within minutes was sat waiting in our kitchen for the police to arrive – with Ian’s foot inches away from his nose just in case he decided to make a run for it.
Over the years Ian continued to impress people as he translated his sporting and maths skills to abilities in the work environment. The quiet and gentle man was so often the brains behind other people’s success. Many of you here know that. From his early years at Sony where he worked on the first digital video recorder in the labs in California to his later years in Sony at Basingstoke in product management and marketing, he steadily rose up the ranks as his sound judgement, his leadership, his business acumen and more recently in Harris, his passion for new business and gentle but persuasive nature helped the teams and management around him make good decisions and enjoy success in areas where others had struggled. On the fun side of work, he was a familiar face on the dance floor at the RTS dinners, the Vision Charity balls and other events where I admired the dancing skills which he and Lorraine displayed so well on so many occasions..
Perhaps the thing about Ian’s work life we can thank him most for was his ability to mentor and push people on his team and others around him forward to take small but calculated risks. There are so many people - some of you are here who owe thanks for their own careers to Ian. I am one of them - I followed Ian to Sony and then followed him to Harris. He was the guy I called for advice about whether I made the big decision to move to Sony. Secretly we were both excited at the idea of working together. That was 1993.
Limited space prevents me writing other stories, adventures and memories here, but Derek has written a poem "Ian's Charlestown" which captures our fondest thoughts of Ian written from Ian’s perspective in his favourite place Charlestown in Cornwall.
Ian you were the man so many of us loved more than you ever knew.. we miss you.
Richard
